Work With Us

Would you make a good Systems Administrator? Join us at our lovely Dupont Circle office (what we're lacking is space we make up for with style).

Arnold Vs. Arnold

If you can afford them, flash movies are a great way to promote your campaign. You can go funny or disturbing--either
way your chances of building a viral campaign increase significantly.
The Institute for Politics, Democracy & the Internet seems to think so.

Thumbs Up

Last night I joined roughly 30 of D.C.'s young professionals at Mark and Orlando's to watch Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price.
I was impressed--mostly by the number of people that came out on a
rainy night to see a documentary about Walmart. The organization of
over 100,000 activists is, as Jim Gilliam of Brave New Films puts it, the largest grassroots mobilization in movie history.

Happy Holidays -Ideas for the Gift Giving Season

The holiday season is primo fundraising time, whether it be for that
end-of-the year push, a special campaign or alternative gift giving. We
will be holding a strategy session on this very topic on November 16th,
and we'd love to see our loyal blog readers there.

Sign up to let us know you're coming. In the meantime, Network For Good has some great resources for the giving season.

Extreme Makeover-DIA Edition

We hope you're all enjoying the HQ makeover! I'd like to point you to the Did You Know space, where you can share your DIA story.

We're
looking for cool things you're doing with the DIA tools, and how they
have impacted your organization's effectiveness. The prize for playing
is a possible mention on our website/promo materials (Hey, we're a
nonprofit too!).

Be Our Guest

Technorati passed the 20 million mark yesterday with a blog from an elementary school in Reims, France, in the heart of
Champagne country. They started the blog to celebrate the childrens' running 2 miles
in a Relay Marathon.

Not
to be outdone, we are introducing guest blogging to this space. Monthly
(or so...) our guests will be chatting about
nonprofit issues, advocacy campaigns, strategy and hopefully much more.
Send me a note if you're interested in participating! ( mara at

Fighting Blogspam

Blogspamming and how to avoid it was brought up by one of our users today. A comprehensive list of tactics is found at blogspam.org, or you could always take it up with the spurious Association of Search Engine Spammers.

Shine on You Crazy Weblog

I came across this great Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents through Nonprofit Online News.
The most compelling aspect of the handbook is their discussion about
the subversive blogging community. With examples from Hong Kong to
Nepal, they touch on censorship, ethics and journalistic credibility.
Even if you're blogging about your kittens, these things ring true.

Master of Your Domain

A testament to the importance of registering your organization's domain name comes from The Artful Manager.

Personally, I'm still waiting for blackcat.com to cave.

And Now For Something New...

Much
is being said about how to build your list, flog your blog and
encourage action online, so here is a retro concept ---offline
organizing. This morning I attended a workshop by Civic Action Strategies on turning online activists into offline activists. Quick translation---getting email addresses is not enough.

Often times the gap between having your supporters take action online
and encouraging them to participate in offline events such as strategy
sessions, film screenings and community events is more difficult to
breach than you would like. However, these activities are key to
fostering strong relationships with your constituents and keeping them
interested in your issue.
