Director of Finance and Administration

DemocracyInAction.org / Wired For Change, Inc. is hiring a dynamic person to provide leadership, and financial and administrative management expertise during an important period of growth and transformation. This position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced financial manager who is eager to make his or her mark in the social change movement. The ideal candidate will possess both the skills to lead and manage financial and administrative operations across 2 distinct but related organizations.

Working directly with the Executive Director and CEO, the Director of Finance & Administration will develop and implement the financial and administrative operating plans aligned with the organization's strategic goals. These include but are not limited to managing its operational infrastructure with respect to financial, information management, administration, human resources and facilities needs to ensure that the organization has effective best practices and resource alignment to provide exceptional services.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding manager who is highly organized and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task in an innovative, thoughtful and collaborative manner.

General areas of responsibility include:

Financial Leadership & Management: Provide overall financial leadership for both WFC and DIA. Provide strategic advice and guidance to and work with the Exec Dir/ CEO to make sure that professional financial procedures, controls and reporting systems are in place to support the successful implementation of the strategic plan. Work with the senior managers and staff to implement the priorities that provide fiscal stability and position us for organizational growth. Put resources in place to support the vision including collaborating with external consultants if necessary.

Ensure that fiscal stability is maintained through the successful management of a complex ASP operation with hundreds of clients, appropriate fiscal controls, and compliance with all regulatory and legislative requirements. Maintain financial records including but not limited to income statement, balance sheet and cash flow projections and prepare accurate and timely financial reports for the CEO, Board of Directors and senior management team. Oversee the development and implementation of the organization’s accounting and finance best practices. Successfully manage relationships with external auditors and other key financial professionals. Perform financial analysis of financial statements, and key financial performance indicators and trends. Supervise activities related to financial accounting, billing, contracts, inventory and banking.

Organizational Management: Work closely with the CEO to refine and develop policies and set organization direction to strengthen and maintain programs and services. Work collaboratively with and assist senior managers in achieving fiscal discipline and meeting financial benchmarks of their programs. Develop, streamline and implement best practices that drive efficiency and support stable and effective organizational infrastructure. Invest in staff leadership to foster effective teamwork, seamless communication and high levels of morale. Manage Human Resources for quickly growing organization.

Operations Management: Oversee the creation of concrete and realistic timelines, budgets, and work plans. Assume responsibility for effective project management, ensuring top-quality performance of established projects, initiatives, and internal efforts. Establish a tone within the organization which stresses results and accountability while encouraging collaboration among and support for the staff. Supervise and manage small administrative staff and manage external service providers relative to projects as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal attributes and experiences:

  • Demonstrated success managing financial and administrative operations including experience in HR for an organization of similar size and complexity. A CPA and/or MBA degree is preferred. At least five years of accounting, finance and administrative management experience is ideal.
  • A proven track record providing finance and administrative oversight. An understanding of nonprofit management and resource sharing between two distinct but related organizations.
  • A seasoned, collaborative and energetic manager with a consultative and hands-on management style and the ability to understand and implement ideas and practices, and to provide strategic guidance for the organization. The ability to lead and motivate a talented and committed staff and to exemplify goals of service and support.
  • A strategic, analytical thinker who can translate and implement strategies into well-defined and operationally efficient practices.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills are a must. Excellent interpersonal skills and a management style that combines respectful collaboration with disciplined productivity.
  • The ability to work closely with, support and manage the expertise of the staff, with superior management techniques.
  • A passion for hands-on non-profit financial and administrative operations and public accounting to drive and support the cultivation of organizational transformation and a zest for cultivating new opportunities for growth, expansion and new revenue streams while maintaining fiscal stability. An entrepreneurial nature married to a service-providing orientation and an ability to act creatively and nimbly in response to the unexpected.
  • The integrity and flexibility (and humor!) necessary to address the practicalities of a small nonprofit, the respect to honor the impressive work done to date, and the ability to support the continued growth and direction of the organization.
  • A commitment to the mission and values of the organization evidenced by a long-term commitment to the position.
