An anthropological introduction to YouTube

| | | | | | | |

Kansas State anthropology professor Michael Wesch apparently recorded this stunning presentation on culture, life, modernity in the YouTube community mere blocks from DIA world headquarters.

(You might remember him from such video phenomena as this, whose virality he discusses here.)

This is 55 minutes long, but you won't notice the length one bit. Here's the project's blog.

CCR Closes the E-Advocacy Loop With Holiday Video

| | | | | | | | |

Two weeks ago, the DIAtribe picked the brain of Owen Henkel at the Center for Constitutional Rights on the hit Send Bush a Copy of the Constitution action they've been running.

So, after everyone clicks-here-to-take-action, what happens? Did they actually deliver all the Constitutions?

Well ... sort of. Here's a wink-nod wrap to the action with a little virality of its own:

Sean Taylor and Quiet Riot: Flash Tribute Communities

| | | | | | | | | | |

We know about flash mobs. But online junctions are also poles that attract communal grieving, like the spot on a dead man's curve where a popular high schooler crashed.

Adherents of the savage ballet are surely aware that NFL star Sean Taylor died this morning from a gunshot wound he had suffered Sunday night. News of the shooting broke Monday morning, and of his death, earlier today.

Which made this otherwise innocuous YouTube of Taylor highlights posted over the summer an instant online shrine. Over 1,100 comments have been posted as of this writing (surely more by the time you click it) -- almost all of them during the past two days.

The Weekend Hero

It's always a bugger trying to pick out a Halloween costume.

Digital Story Telling Tips

| | | | | | | | |

Below are some handy suggestions I pulled from the presentation Age of YouTube: Using Video Online to Reach the Masses which was presented at NTEN’s Technology 2007 Conference.

The Serial Approach - Consider offering a series of short videos (2-3 minutes) that explain your issue, instead of making an expensive project video (or in addition to). See how I Love Mountains features short videos about the destructive practice of mountaintop removal on their homepage.

E-xemplar: YouTube-DIA Campaign Mashup

| | | | |

On the DIA Support listserv, a question about integrating YouTube with DemocracyInAction pages yielded this nifty Oceana action page with a YouTube embed.

Nice pairing. Cameron explains the trick to making sure YouTube plays nicely with DIA:

When embedding YouTube in DIA, the thing to look out for is the WYSIWYG ["What You See Is What You Get" -- the word processor-like HTML editor used in e-mail blasts and on some user-facing pages. -ed.] editor. It has a tendency to mangle code, so I would suggest disabling it when adding the HTML provided by YouTube.

Backwards Hamburger, Sideways Marketing

| | | |

Free Range Graphics -- DIA's old landlords -- just dropped this YouTube to promote the upcoming release of Fast Food Nation.

Free Range always does tight video agitprop. The movie's got another nice viral hook with DoYouWantLiesWithThat.com, which solicits admissions of on-the-job indiscretions. (You can get the site itself to "confess" that it's actually a marketing page.)

[Sort of like Allan Benamer's "confessions box" on the Confessions of a Nonprofit IT Director blog. Something about the idea of anonymously baring the soul is powerfully -- even mythologically -- alluring...]
